Located close to the shores of Georgian Bay, Stayner-based business BACKWOOD DESIGN CO. specializes in handcrafting unique, live edge furniture and charcuterie boards. Their most popular product is their trademark line of epoxy art cheeseboards they call Georgian Bay Boards®. These functional art pieces are made from salvaged, local wood and exhibit a hand-painted, epoxy artwork feature that is inspired by the beautiful shoreline of Georgian Bay.

BACKWOOD DESIGN CO.’s owner, Lindsay Russell, is a self-taught woodworker and mixed media artist. Lindsay’s techniques are organic and experimental and she loves that no two pieces are ever the same. Her artwork is free flowing, intuitive and innovative and she has developed her own unique and trademark techniques. Lindsay demonstrates a passionate belief for community over competition and has teamed up with several other local makers to create new and unique artisan pieces to innovate and expand her product lines. Some of these pieces include driftwood cheese knives, hand-blown glass cheese domes, reclaimed railway spike knives and epoxy art wall clocks.

Fuelling her passion to inspire through creativity and woodworking, Lindsay strongly believes in contributing to a sustainable future and an eco-friendly social culture. In addition to creating beautiful and unique wooden art, BACKWOOD DESIGN CO.’s focus is to eliminate reduce their carbon footprint, packaging waste and overall effect on the environment. They also hope to contribute to efforts to reverse the effects of climate change and deforestation in Canada through their own initiatives by planting one tree for every item they sell.
